The District of Kitimat is considering adding hefty import tariffs to purchases made in Terrace.

The proposal will add a 20 per cent fee when shoppers return to Kitimat and must declare their purchases at the border at town limits.

The Kitimat mayor says this is all geared towards the town’s plan to “Make Kitimat Great Again.”

The construction of a border and customs crossing at Kitimat’s town limits is expected to cost approximately $3 million, inclusive of the automatic rifles which customs officers will be equipped with.

The mayor says that Terrace will pay for it.
