Seeing an opening, Kitimat fills out application form to join European Union

Following the United Kingdom’s ‘Brexit’ vote to leave the European Union, the District of Kitimat has opted to take advantage of their impendingĀ departure to seek its own membership.world-1264062_1280

The town says that even though Kitimat may not be a nation-state itself, the opportunity for generally unrestricted travel to European countries is a strong benefit, plus there’s expanded opportunities for European trade as well.

The downside though is Kitimat may have to dig deep to cover the net 8.5 billion pounds the United Kingdom paid for their membership in 2015. That’s close to $15 billion in Canadian currency. That doesn’t even include the non-refundable $40 application fee to submit the EU applicationĀ form.
